How Sunless Tanners Work

Bronzers: Cosmetic bronzers produce an immediate colour change and usually wash off with soap and water. Most sunless tanning products contain a mixture of both bronzers and DHA.

DHA: Also known as dihydrozyacetone is refined from a vegetable source, most likely sugar beets or sugar cane.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective products available are sunless or self tanning lotions that contain DHA as the active ingredient.

DHA interacts with the dead cells located in the stratum corneum (horny layer) of the epidermis. As it interacts with the cells a colour change occurs.

DHA works with the keratin protein in the top layer of the skin. This is why the results are temporary; the outer skin is continually renewing itself.

Erythrulose: Effectively this is the same as DHA, when the two are used together the result is a longer lasting tan.
